01

The project

A world rebuilt after limitless growth

Otri is a hopeful science-fantasy setting in its Second Age. Long after human empires exhausted the living systems that carried their magic and technology, small communities have rebuilt around sufficiency, local resilience, ecological reciprocity, and shared dignity.

Humans share the world with Companions—sentient biomechanical persons in animal forms—and work with æther, a living current that joins science and magic without permitting limitless use. Adventurers reconnect distant places, investigate the overgrown First Age, and return discoveries to the commons. They seek no conquest and own no ruin. Every discovery becomes a responsibility.

The World Bible defines Otri’s history, æther, Companions, everyday life, governance, belief, technology, travel, adventure, Brackenmere Reach, Tuli, and Eld. Distant regions and enduring mysteries remain open so later work can grow without contradicting the foundation.

My contribution

What I established

  • Developed the Long Exhaustion and Quiet as a systemic collapse caused by extraction, forced throughput, and neglected limits rather than one convenient villain or final war.
  • Defined eight practical rules for æther so magic, technology, ecological load, repair, and First Age artifacts share one intelligible logic.
  • Created Companions as biomechanical persons with agency, telepathy, bodily needs, friendships, consent, and lives beyond their bonded humans.
  • Designed a commons-based social order in which food, shelter, care, education, mobility, and communication support belong to every person without eliminating scarcity, choice, craft, or exchange.
  • Developed the Path as a non-institutional philosophy of kinship, balance, curiosity, and kindness rather than a church, law, or compulsory metaphysics.
  • Connected adventure to stewardship, observation, repair, hospitality, and the responsible return of context rather than ownership or domination.
  • Embedded accessibility into ordinary community design and demonstrated the world through Tuli, a sixteen-year-old leatherworker apprentice, her æther-powered wheelchair, and Eld, her blue tiger-like Companion.

Design logic

A coherent social ecology

Otri’s strongest worldbuilding work happens in the relationships between its parts. Technology changes economics; belief shapes hospitality; Companion personhood changes architecture; history changes what adventure means.

01

Abundance with limits

Æther is abundant, but every body, habitat, material, and mechanism has finite safe throughput. Power is never permission to ignore the vessel carrying it.

02

Peace as cultural work

There are no nations, kings, standing armies, or normalized combat professions. Harm and conflict still exist, so safety, accountability, restitution, and repair remain necessary practices.

03

Companionship without ownership

A human and Companion may become essentially inseparable, but they remain two wills. Bond, assistance, and shared life never turn a person into property or equipment.

04

Adventure without conquest

Guildhalls, reopening rails, airships, requests, weather, and ruins invite movement. Discovery is valuable because it restores relationships and context, not because it creates a claim.

Tools used

How the worldbuilding tools work together

Worldbuilding

A complete present-day foundation connects history, ecology, travel, settlement, technology, daily life, adventure, and unresolved horizons.

Systems Design

Ætheric limits, commons provision, exchange, governance, repair, mobility, and exploration constrain and reinforce one another.

Lore & Cultural History

The First Age, Long Exhaustion, Quiet, Second Age, and Age of Adventure shape current choices without reducing history to exposition.

Belief & Cultural Systems

The Path’s four truths influence etiquette, festivals, stewardship, curiosity, conflict, and belonging without becoming compulsory doctrine.

Canon & Internal Logic

Explicit æther rules, Companion personhood, public commons, and anti-domination principles provide reusable checks for later creation.

Thematic Coherence

Ecological responsibility, shared dignity, curiosity, kindness, and limits recur through metaphysics, institutions, technology, and adventure.

Identity Development

Biomechanical animal persons, green ruins, repairable ætheric technology, guildhall hospitality, and stewardship-centered adventure give Otri a distinct shape.

Atmosphere & Tone

Otri remains hopeful without becoming frictionless: beautiful weather turns, structures fail, old machines wake, and good people disagree.

05

Key decisions

Decisions that define Otri

A post-collapse world that learned something

The Second Age is neither nostalgic primitivism nor a return to First Age scale. It selectively develops what can be understood, repaired, and carried without repeating the old appetite.

Personhood has practical consequences

Calling Companions people changes consent, testimony, medicine, housing, transport, family, and the etiquette of every bonded pair.

Accessibility shown through ordinary life

Tuli’s community-built æther wheelchair, leatherwork apprenticeship, family, village, and bond with Eld show access as shared infrastructure rather than a heroic exception.

Intentional negative space

The world bible names what is true and what remains mysterious. It supports later invention without pretending every river, ruin, and horizon must already be filled.
